About the National Museum of Bermuda:
Originally founded as the Bermuda Maritime Museum in 1974 under the auspices of the Bermuda National Trust, the National Museum of Bermuda was commissioned with the preservation of the island’s 500-year history. The National Museum of Bermuda is a family-friendly Bermuda Attraction that has been delighting visitors for more than 40 years. Spend an afternoon at this Bermuda Attraction during your stay at our Bermuda Resort.
In 1978, British Parliament officially charged the institution with overseeing the exploration, archaeology, research, preservation and exhibition of Bermuda’s historical artifacts. This most important of Bermuda Attractions is also tasked with the restoration and maintenance the structures that make up the Keep Fort.
Since then the sphere of the Museum’s influence has extended to the island’s heritage as well as its terrestrial and undersea treasures via its duties as a museum along with education and public awareness. The National Museum of Bermuda is indeed a vital institution.
Some of the great exhibits include the Hall of History which tells the story of Bermuda’s 500-year human history with murals created by local artist Graham Foster. Banknotes of Bermuda is another interesting exhibit that highlights the history of the island’s currency with examples from different time periods on display.
Defence Heritage archives the history of the more than 90 forts erected on the island over the course of three centuries. There are many more exhibits and collections showcasing cultural artifacts, sunken treasure, and natural history. As a non-profit, proceeds from the patronage of this wonderful conservatory go straight back into the work the museum does.
After spending the day researching the island’s history, you can enjoy one of the many Bermuda Activities located on or near our Bermuda Resort. From parasailing and scuba diving to spending a day at The Spa, Elbow Beach Bermuda Resort & Spa has something for every visitor.
