About Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship:
Every July, teams of expert deep sea fishermen descend on Bermuda to compete in the nearly month long Triple Crown Billfish Championship. The competition consists of three legs, which are in fact 3 separate contests that fall under the Triple Crown banner.
The first is the Bermuda Billfish Blast which takes place July 3rd through the 7th. The Blast is a 3-day contest in which the teams fish and attempt to end up with the most points, which determines the winner. There are also categories such as Largest Blue Marlin, Lady Angler, and Junior Angler.
The second leg of this Bermuda Event is the Bermuda Big Game Classic which goes from July 12th to the 16th. This 3-day team contest is the biggest, most respected big fish tournament in Bermuda. This match is decided by points. Species eligible for points include Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Spearfish, Tuna, Wahoo, and Sailfish. The Bermuda Big Game Classic features several customs that are part of the Classic like the boat parade, Bacardi cocktail reception, and the mid-week barbeque.
The third and final leg of the Triple Crown Billfish Championship, the Sea Horse Anglers Club Bermuda Billfish Tournament, starts on July 19th and wraps up on the 23rd. This is the oldest angling tournament on the island. The purpose of this leg is for each team to increase their overall points in hopes of winning not only the third leg, the Sea Horse, but the whole competition, which is the Triple Crown.
While watching the teams entered in the Triple Crown Billfish Championship fish, unless you have a boat, isn’t an option, fishing fans can watch the outcome of each competition at the weigh-in station. The fishing for each competition day starts at 8:30am and the clock stops at 4:30pm. For all three competitions the weigh-ins will take place at Barr’s Bay Waterfront Park. Bacardi will be hosting an open bar at the park that will open each day at 4:30 p.m. - in time for weigh-ins.
